This presentation was used in one of the thematic sessions of the first African WinS ILE on Sustaining WinS.

The session explored sustainability from the perspective of infrastructure, operation and maintenance, financing, and budgeting for WinS. The interrelated nature of these themes to sustainability and the importance to consider each of the elements as part of a systems approach was the focus of the session.

Streams of financing for WinS including innovative methods implemented in participating countries to increase financial allocations for WinS were examined. Budgeting, and O&M, were highlighted through country examples on lifecycle costing, noting the importance of selecting and costing appropriate and affordable technologies for schools that can be managed by recurrent budgets allocated by Ministry of Education. In closing of the session, low-cost and affordable designs for handwash, water supply and toilet facilities were showcased.
